Lawn Mower Gearbox Repair and Maintenance

Most problems with lawn mower gearbox drive equipment are caused by a lack of service and maintenance. Operators can check a few things before using their equipment.

Always maintain proper oil levels. If the mower gearbox speed is low, the bearing will not be fully lubricated. If the lawnmower gearbox is too full, it will generate heat, causing the box to heat up and possibly damage the seals.

Check the free clearance of the input and output shafts. If there is any free space, it may be a sign of bearing wear or a change in bearing preload Settings. Excessive clearance will result in oil seal failure, resulting in lubricant loss and bearing and gear damage. In most cases, bearing preload can be reset to eliminate all radial clearance by rehashing or tightening the bearing adjustment nut.

Most lawn mower gearboxes require an air vent to prevent pressure from building up inside the housing. Check regularly to make sure the respirator is working properly. If the pressure in the box increases, the oil seal will break, and lubricant loss will occur.
